Getting To Know Your International Contacts

My conversation partner's name is Monique Cook. Monique is originally from Decatur, GA but recently decided to pursue her early childhood career in Abu Dhabi. Most of the people that are poor in Abu Dhabi are usually manual laborers from Asian countries, that leave their children in their home countries because they cannot afford international school fees in Abu Dhabi. In a country of glitz, lights, and wealth, it is hard to believe that there are people living in poverty in the UAE. The UAE'S major cities, Dubai and Abu Dhabi consists of wealthy locals, prospering expats, and a much lower class of second class citizens who usually derive from countries in south east Asia. These are the people who build the country, the many skyscrapers popping up everyday in the Dubai and Abu Dhabi skyline, the people servicing your 5 star stay, and ensuring that tourism is enjoyable.

Advocacy and change will only occur on a global level after we implement policy, support, assistance and aid on a more local level, within our communities. For instance, as an early childhood professional, I plan to use my knowledge and voice to assist programs and organizations to raise awareness around the issues of poverty and homelessness in Atlanta, especially within low-income African American communities. In the metro Atlanta (Fulton county area) there tend to consist of higher poverty rates and unequal opportunity. As a professional who genuinely cares for children’s overall well being, mental health and futures, I plan to be a voice on their behalf.

Our Approach

We believe that with the right education and support, one child has the potential to lift an entire family out of poverty and that a generation of educated children has the power to change a whole society. Through intensive, long-term investments in children, CCF is helping students build the skills, confidence and integrity they need to become the progressive spokespeople and leaders of change in their communities.
Since 2004, we’ve been working with some of the most impoverished communities in Cambodia, centered around the former garbage dump at Steung Meanchey. Back then, our world revolved around the health and well-being of 45 children living on the garbage dump. Today there are more than 2,200 students working towards a better future for themselves and their families through CCF’s award winning education program.
The garbage dump was closed in 2009, however the need for CCF’s services continues as Steung Meanchey remains an entry-point into Phnom Penh for destitute families with no option but to try and make a living through scavenging or begging on the city streets.
Through a range of programs that focus on 6 core areas – Education, Leadership, Community Outreach, Healthcare, Childcare and Vocational Training – we take a holistic, on-the-ground approach to developing integrated solutions to the complex issues of poverty.

ONE TREND THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION ON THE SITE WAS.....

1. FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
2. JOB AND VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES
3. THE LIST OF IN-KIND DONATIONS FOR EDUCATION... The organization provides a list of materials that they are collecting to donate to children and need and provide the email address for how to send the materials.

Cambodian Children’s Fund transforms the country's most impoverished kids into tomorrow's leaders, by delivering education, family support and community development programs into the heart of Cambodia’s most impoverished communities.

          "WE INVEST STRATEGICALLy"

We identify innovative groups as they emerge, and over the course of three to seven years, help them to grow and thrive using flexible, strategic investments. For approximately three out of every four grassroots partners, we are the first US-based institutional funder. Eighty percent of our grassroots partners have budgets under $100,000 when they receive their first GFC grant.

I decided to study this organization because I admire how they go above and beyond to search for and build up other influential organizations around the world and invest in their growth and in order to promote change, provide aid, assistance, support, guidance and therapy to children who are desperately in need! This organization consist of dedicated advocates who have an intrinsic desire to protect the rights of children.

This organization offers many job opportunities and internships for early childhood professionals. They also offer opportunities for professionals to donate money in order for children to grow, learn and thrive.
